A servo drive is nothing but a unique kind of electronic amplifier. Now this electronic amplifier is associated with some special procedures. It is mainly used to power up the electric servo devices or instruments. The main function of a servo drive is monitoring the feedback signals that the servo mechanisms send and continuously adjusting the deviations from the expected performances.

The servo drives obtains the control signals from the main control structure. The servo drives then amplifies the signal and after that transmits the electric current right to the servo motors. This is mainly to produce the motion control that is proportional to the command signal.

Generally, the command signal stands for a 'desired speed' but it can also symbolize a preferred 'torque' and 'position'. The servo motor comes with a sensor which comes attached to it. Now this sensor is responsible to account the real status of the motor and sends it back to the servo drive.

After the status is checked the servo drive then evaluates the position of the control motor with the position of the actual motor. The servo drive then changes the rate of the voltage or the pulse width to the motor in order to rectify any sort of deviation from the command motor status.

In a typical situation, the servo motor of the velocity control system rotates at a speed that is approximately close to the signal speed that gets received by the servo drive from the actual control system. There are various parameters like feedback gain, proportional gain or stiffness and derivative gain or damping that can be adjusted in order to attain the required performance. The procedure of regulation of these factors is also known as performance tuning.

Brushless servo drives is more like a dc shunt motor that has been curved inside out. The brushless servo drives are found with some enduring magnetic poles in the rotor that gets attracted to the opposite magnetic rotating poles inside the stator and creating torque. The brushless servo drives structure usually accelerates the heat dissipation which in turn reduces the rotor inertia.
