Fishing Rods

Angling is now seen by many as a major sport and activity although obviously its roots are derived from essential hunting for food. Whilst many ancient civilisations teach how to catch fish with the person's bare hands a modern fisherman, whether fishing for pleasure or necessity will usually use some equipment. The most common and obvious of these is the fishing rod.

A fishing rod is as the name suggests a long rod like pole which is used for the catching of fish. They have been used in various forms as far back as Ancient Egypt, China, Greece, Rome and Medieval England and back then were commonly known as Angles which is where the term "Angling", as an alternative to fishing, comes from.

Varieties

Depending on the area of water being fished and the variety of fish one expects to catch there are numerous types and sizes of rods available from literally hundreds of manufacturers, although a lot of fishers especially those who are more experienced are likely to have a preference over which manufacturers' rod they use.

A fly rod for example is one which is used in fly fishing and is lightweight, thin and very flexible which helps when casting the artificial fly which is used as bait. In contrast a sea rod which is used for sea fishing is one which is very long (often four metres) and is extremely thick which allows for larger fish to be caught and for longer lines to be spun, allowing for ocean depth. These sea rods are sometimes sub-categorised for allow for a certain species of fish, such as shark or marlin.

The Importance of Finding the Right Rod

In addition to finding the right rod for the particular style and location of fishing many anglers have their own preferences as to size, girth and length as well as the weight which is appropriate to the size of the particular angler and the length of line which must be cast along with the frequency at which is it recast. As much of angling as a professional sport now takes place under competition rules the right rod for the job is paramount to the process.
