The Problem with Proofreading

Proofreading is hard at the best of times. When you are reading through your own work, your mind instantly skips over errors as it knows exactly what you were trying to say and in turn your mind will instantly tell your brain the word or phrases you had intended to put. Just like our brains can very easily unscramble words that are completely jumbled, just so long as they have all the letters and start and end with the right ones, our brains instantly unscramble words to allow us to understand.

Whilst this makes our brains extremely impressive machines, it is a nightmare when you need to check the grammar or spelling of a document. This problem is raised even further when it comes to proofreading a translated document. If you are multi-lingual and have documents needing to be read by those in other countries, then proofreading a document will be extremely difficult. Not only are there likely to be fewer people in your company able to take on that proofreading for you, but even the most fluent foreign speaker will not always be fully aware of spelling and grammar in the written sense.

Proofreading is a very technical skill and not everyone will be able to perform such tasks even on other people’s work. Therefore, for translated documents, it will usually be a good idea to have a translation company do that proofreading for you. Language translators will be skilled in not only writing in foreign languages but also proofreading documents. Proofreading courses can be very in depth and the best proofreaders will be able to utilise very specific skills to ensure a document is correct. Not only that, but the same language translators will also be able to focus any document more effectively to its intended audience, taking culture and context into consideration far more than other individuals may be able to.

So when it comes to any proofreading of important documents, ensure that you have the right people to do it. For translated documents, that will almost certainly be a professional and experienced translation company.
