How to Clean Your Everyday Jewellery

Would you wear a dress ten times or more without cleaning it? What about every day? In the hope that the answer is no, then the same should go for your costume jewellery. While it is quite common practice to clean silver or gold jewellery regularly using specially-customised solutions, costume jewellery often gets forgotten about. Nevertheless, all those nooks and crannies can harbour dirt and grime which builds up over time becoming unhygienic and diminishing the appearance of your pieces.

Costume jewellery can actually be harder to clean that more classic jewellery items, because it is less robust and needs a less vigorous approach. The item may also use different materials, such as wood, plastic, fabric and metal in one piece. Therefore, you need to make sure the cleaning products you are using are appropriate for that material. The best approach is to use a cleaning product that is suitable for the weakest part of the jewellery.

Although mild detergent and water is advised for cleaning precious metals and gemstones, this is not the case for costume jewellery pieces as it leaves a residue. Neither is the use of strong alcohol or acid-based products recommended. Use a mild specific jewellery cleaning product instead, along with a small soft brush (like a baby toothbrush or a special jewellery brush) and cloth. Only use a small amount of the cleaning product and make sure not to soak your jewellery in it. Get out any stubborn build ups using the soft brush or a cotton bud. Wooden toothpicks can be good, but may scratch if you slip. Finally, always make sure to dry your items properly, but don’t use a hairdryer for this purpose as the intense blast of heat may weaken any glues or adhesives used in the manufacturing of your jewellery item.
