Looking at the competitiveness of keywords
When starting out it makes sense to look at the competitiveness of the keywords available. If your company offers landscape construction then using ‘landscapers’ as a keyword will open you to high levels of competition although it will score the top search results. However using ‘Landscape construction’ may get fewer searches but it will have less competition and is likely to attract better traffic and conversion numbers as it is more relevant to the services offered.

By then adding in a local keyword such as Manchester you can sculpt your target traffic even further to eradicate some of the ‘search noise’. This will give you a great insight into who your target customers are. If you choose to get even more specific by selecting certain areas of Manchester you can make it easier again to attract relevant traffic. Keeping the focus narrow will achieve quicker results and better costs.

When looking at keyword analysis one with over 50 percent difficulty is extremely competitive. Over 26 percent difficulty equates to a moderately competitive keyword. The more competitive the keyword is the greater the cost to get the best results. These keywords will attract higher levels of traffic but it will take considerable time and money to get to where you want to be. The timeline on your ROI will be significantly longer.

Most small businesses will find they simply do not have the time to let this type of SEO activity progress. Even if some SEO services are outsourced the costs involved can be make big SEO campaigns unviable. It makes sense however to choose a single competitive keyword and then focus on less popular keywords that are specific to your product or services and location.

Why it’s best to start small
Many businesses will feel uncomfortable about limiting their business to a certain area. An SEO agency will appreciate this and often will try to work with that. However often taking a wider approach is just not practical. It takes much longer to get results and see a healthy return on investment. There is also less web visibility taking this strategy.

The results will be more powerful if you start out at a local level and then branch out. If you start out ranking well for your town, you can then expand to your county and then perhaps a region. This will allow you to keep strong search results for more localised keywords upping the web visibility and reach. If you start out nationally your ranking won’t be as good and as local searches are increasingly popular you could be missing out.
