Basic first aid can save lives, and all employers have a duty to their employees to provide adequate and appropriate first aid provision, in terms of equipment, facilities and personnel, as laid out in The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. This means that legally businesses are required to have a first aid box on site and a member of personnel responsible for first aid as a minimum. Although a qualified first aider is not always necessary, you will still need to have an appointed person to look after the first aid equipment and be responsible for calling the emergency services if needed.

No matter what size the business, it is a good idea to make sure that there is more than one person who knows what to do in case of accident or emergency. It is no good making sure one dedicated team member has undergone first aid training to then find that they are on holiday when the accident occurs and assistance is required. First aid courses can be run for several members of your workforce, or even for your whole team if you have a small business so that everyone is covered should there be an incident.

First aid training doesn’t just benefit your business and help you to fulfil the legal requirements. Your employees will also then know what to do should there be a first aid emergency outside of work and will help them to respond calmly rather than panic. If your first aiders attended their first aid courses one or several years ago, it is also a good idea to send them on refresher courses so that they will be fully prepared in an emergency situation, particularly if they haven’t had occasion to put the skills they learnt first time round into practice.
