Driving Lessons in Guildford

Guildford is a busy market town in the county of Surrey. It is located 27 miles from London and links it with Portsmouth and the surrounding coastal area. Guildford is extremely popular with residents and industry and was rated the 9th best place to live by a Channel 4 poll in 2006.

The economy in Guildford is thriving too, with many global leaders such as Vodafone, Misibushi and Electronic Arts choosing to build a significant base there.

Why is Driving so Important in Guildford

More people now find that the ability to drive affords them a luxury and independence which it is simply impossible to have when constantly relying on public transport or other people. It is easy to discount the freedom which can be achieved by getting behind the wheel but whether it’s a simple shopping trip, a business meeting or a trip to the coast getting there under your own steam is not only quicker and more reliable but ultimately more gratifying than the alternatives.

Driving and vehicle access is also essential now for many job roles, whether it’s visiting clients, transporting goods or simply having more than one office base it is increasingly common for businesses to refuse applications from those who cannot drive or prioritise ones from applicants with driving ability.

What is involved?

Given the regulations relating to the Highway Code and the potential dangers involved in driving it should come as no surprise that there is a lot involved in learning how to drive. Learner Drivers must be at least 17 years old and have a provisional licence from the DVLA. A Provisional Licence allows them to drive a standard motor vehicle when accompanied by a qualified driver. They must then undertake lessons with a qualified or experienced driver and once they have reached an acceptable level of proficiency must pass two examinations; a theory and a practical.

The theory test involves a computerised multiple choice examination with fifty questions. In order to pass a candidate must pass at least 43 of these. Once this test has been passed, but not before a learner must then sit the practical examination which is an hour long test of their physical driving ability and involves both standard driving and manoeuvres such as a turn in the road and reversing around a corner.
