Operating Guidelines For An Auto GPS In Your Vehicle

If you have a GPS device for your automobile and you plan to use for a road trip, or even if you are just using it to get across town, you will want to follow certain rules. Your GPS is designed to get you from point A to point B, but it should be used with care. If you use it properly, however, your GPS will give you years of service to allow for safer and easier travel.

Right vs. Wrong Way to Program Your GPS

Let's say you're sitting in your driveway about to go somewhere and you're in a hurry. So, instead of programming your GPS device and then going, you decide to try to punch your destination's address into your new Garmin Nuvi 295W while the car is moving. That's not a very safe thing to do. All it takes is for you to divert your eyes from the road for one second and you could find yourself in a serious car accident. So make sure you only program your GPS device while the car is stopped.

Tolls and Alternate Routes

Now, there may be times when the GPS device alerts you to certain things mid trip. For example, your Garmin Nuvi 1250 may notify you that a toll road is approaching or that there is serious traffic up ahead. It will usually then ask you if you would like to choose an alternate route. This will require you to hit a Yes or No button on the screen. If the car is in motion, again, be very careful about taking your eyes off the road. It might be better to pull momentarily to the side when making your decision, which is the safest option.

Speed and Distance

The Garmin Nuvi 1350 will tell you what speed you are currently traveling at and based on that information along with the traffic conditions and the route taken, will give you an estimated time of arrival.

This feature lets you know if you are going to be late and because of that many people think that they can then increase their speed so as to reach their destination at the correct time. Never use your GPS device as an excuse to speed. Rather reach your destination a few minutes late than not at all because you have had an accident.

If you follow the above rules, you will have a much safer time in the car and you'll have a better chance of arriving at any destination in one piece. Remember that your GPS device is just a tool to help you find your way better. You must still pay attention to the road and operate your vehicle as you're supposed to. If you can remember those things, your GPS will serve you well no matter where you're going.
