It is, to a degree, understandable that many small business owners look upon human resources as yet another of those waste of time administrative functions that they could well do without.
It is, to a degree, understandable that many small business owners look upon human resources as yet another of those waste of time administrative functions that they could well do without. They are naturally overstretched enough, as they promotes their companies and build up their teams simultaneously. Human resources is something they tackle head on only if and when they absolutely have to. Yet many a small company has overlooked human resources at their peril, wound up inadvertently contravening employment law and paid the price in an employment tribunal.

Human resources is one heck of a minefield for small business owners to navigate alone and unassisted. Yet, when harnessed effectively, it encapsulates a multitude of different elements that are equally as important to employers and their employees. It lets both parties know, clearly and contractually, where they stand with each other. This understanding, in turn, provides both with the safety nets they might need if either party unfairly reneges on their part of the deal.

It is essential that any and every business complies with employment law that was specifically formulated for deeply practical reasons. Human resources, however, is also a communicative tool with which employers can share their values and visions with their team members. Sharing leads to staff buy in and empowerment. It often progresses to the redressing of job descriptions, training needs, promotional paths, but to name few. All are human resources functions. All are part and parcel of goal sharing between business owners and their teams, followed by their plans of action to work towards achieving them together.
