October is a month of change. Between the temperatures dropping, the sun setting earlier, and the leaves turning into new colors, change is all around us. It's amazing how quickly the days start to grow shorter and nightfall creeps in earlier and earlier. It is an exciting time of year, watching all the leaves change color. You will notice in the beginning of October, subtle leaves changes, but by the end of the month, all the foliage will be vibrant in fall colors.
Why Leaves Change Color
The amount and brilliance of the colors that develop this autumn season are related to weather conditions that occur before and during the time the chlorophyll in the leaves is dwindling. Temperature and moisture are the main influences.
A succession of warm, sunny days and cool, crisp but not freezing nights seems to bring about the most spectacular color displays.
During these days, lots of sugars are produced in the leaf but the cool nights and the gradual closing of veins going into the leaf prevent these sugars from moving out. With these conditions, lots of sugar and lots of light-spur production of the
brilliant anthocyanin pigments, which tint reds, purples, and crimson. Because carotenoids are always present in leaves, the yellow and gold colors remain constant from year to year.
What's in Bloom
There are still plenty of plants and annuals and flowers that are blooming this month. Knockout roses are still blooming, the hydrangeas are still pushing, Sedum Autumn Joy, Lantana, Viburnum, and fall annual are currently in bloom. Autumnal Grasses plumes are currently out right now, which is the nicest part of the seasonal grasses.
What Wildlife it Attracts
Due to the dew that is slowly beginning to arrive, and the change in temperatures in your soil, Grubs will start to become prevalent. If you start noticing brown patches in your lawn, it is possible that it is due to Grubs. Grubs - the Japanese Beetle, burrow in the ground and lay eggs this time of year. It becomes a vicious cycle that you will need to maintain.
What Should Be Done
As summer turns into fall, the soil temperatures drop. This causes and dictates almost all the changes we see. It is a good time of year for planting, since there is little stress on plants right now for digging. Plants right now are not experiencing outer growth, but are rather rooting all season. This makes it a great time for digging and planting. The dew that is developing on the lawn is useful for rebuilding the lawn and providing moisture.
