The quest for
convenience in almost every aspect of our lives, has led a number of electronic
industries to come up with gadgets that make this quest realisable. The
universal
car charger is one such gadget. It comes in handy when you cannot
access power, for instance when travelling. You only have to connect the gadget
to the cigarettes lighter port using the car charger, and the battery charges
as if it would when connected to a wall socket. Well, after the charging, the
next challenge involves ensuring that the battery retains the charge for as
long as possible. This article focuses on how the various charged electronics
devices lose power and how to avoid the loss.
Laptops
According to the
Battery University, a website that features extensive information on batteries
and use, the life expectancy of a laptop battery, more specifically the
lithium-ion type ranges from 18 months to 24 months. Some of the laptops that have
the lithium-ion batteries include the
Samsung
AD-6019, Compaq Mini 110 amongst others. A laptop battery will last
longer if you treat it right. Factors that can cause the duration to reduce
include overcharging the battery, undercharging and exposure to high
temperatures. Cadex Electronics, a company based in Canada that manufactures
battery testing components and equipment, recommend maintaining the laptop
charge at between 20% and 80%. Though it sounds unrealistic to have to unplug
the charger before it gets to full capacity, the recommended range ensures that
the capacity falls well above the undercharge rate while staying clear of the
overcharged level.
Additionally,
avoid keeping the laptop on hot places, like a hot car seat, near the car
engine or windscreen during and after charging. Heat tends to drain batteries
quickly so ensure that you keep it as cool as possible. Some laptops like the
Dell
Mini charger have long cables, for placement at a distance from the
dashboard and engine.
Cell phones, Digital Cameras and Mp3 Players
The factors that
govern the laptops batteries still hold for these other gadgets; keep them cool
and maintain a 20-80% charge percentage. Cell phones drain the battery faster
due to their frequent use. One mistake people do after a battery depletes is to
connect it to the charger and then continue using the gadget as it charges.
This tends to overheat the battery due to the two processes taking place at
once; charging and using charge. It is advisable to leave the gadget to charge
for some time, to about 40%, then unplug for use.
Store the
batteries if you are not using them for a long time. The ideal method of
storing batteries that are not in use is to charge them halfway first before
storing in a cool dry place. This way, even if the battery loses power while
under storage, the used up power tends to be the stored charge, rather than the
self-destructive depletion that happens when they are stored when completely
drained.
