When people think of a career very few people think about working in the voluntary sector. This is because they believe that the voluntary sector only has unpaid voluntary work available, which is understandable. However, nothing could be further from the truth because a significant percentage of people who work in the voluntary sector are paid for the work that they do.
Generally speaking, those voluntary sectors jobs that pay are the ones that provide core services. For example, you may have a homeless shelter that is staffed by a mix of volunteers and paid workers. The manager of the shelter is likely to be paid and they may have a social worker, doctor and procurement manager who are also paid a full salary. Other roles such as cleaning, cooking, serving food are more likely to be filled by a combination of voluntary and paid labour. The exact mix depends on the charity, the nature of their work and the pool of voluntary labour that is available. However, that charity will not make a profit, every penny that comes in is spent on paying wages and overheads such as rent and food to provide a service for people in need.
Voluntary Sector Jobs Are Fulfilling
Most voluntary sector jobs are very fulfilling. Generally speaking, working in the sector means that you are working for dynamic, forward thinking organisations. They are usually run by people who want to make a difference and change things for the better. When you work for them you are part of a generally positive process. The work you do really does make a difference and can help a lot of people.
Voluntary sector jobs are not for everyone, but it is well worth including them in your job search.
Finding Voluntary Sector Jobs
Voluntary sector jobs are advertised the same way as any other job is i.e. in newspapers, magazines and the trade press. However, you will find the most voluntary sector jobs by signing up with those job agencies that specialise in recruiting for the industry. The voluntary sector is also sometimes referred to as the third sector.
