If you work with children you should consider taking a child protection course. It does not really matter whether you are directly responsible for that child or not, if you come into day to day contact with the same children you are in a position of trust and have some duty of care.
You could potentially help the children you come into contact with by taking a child protection course. This is because you will learn how to spot the early signs of abuse in the children you come into contact with and can voice your concerns to people who can sit down with the child and find out if they are actually in danger or not. Without an adult realising something is wrong and giving the child a chance to talk about it there is little or no hope for a child who is living with abuse. They are simply too afraid to ask for help or do not realise that they need help because, to them, the circumstances they live in are normal.
Types of Child Protection Course
There are many types of child protection courses available and which is right for you depends on how involved with children you are. If you are directly responsible for a group of children you not only have to know how to spot the signs of abuse you have to understand who you should be reporting the abuse to and how to handle their parents. You will have to pay additional attention to any abused children you are responsible for and will need training to do so. The kind of child protection course you need is very detailed and will usually be given as part of, say, your teacher training or the training you get to become a GP.
Those who come in contact with children on a regular basis such as, classroom assistants and sports coaches need a much lower level of training. They simply need to be able to spot the signs of abuse. For them a short on-line child protection course is usually best.
