Expats enjoying business success overseas

According to the latest NatWest International Personal Banking (IPB) Quality of Life Index, entrepreneurial expats are having considerable success in their new countries.

It found that seven in ten such people polled believed they achieved more by setting up a firm abroad than they would have done if they'd stayed in the UK.

Singapore, Hong Kong and the US were rated as the top three countries for nurturing enterprise. In contrast, China, the United Arab Emirates and Spain were identified as the worst places in this respect.

Meanwhile, the nations said to have the most positive business prospects were Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

It was also discovered that 78 per cent of expat businesspeople believed faster growth is one of the major advantages of running a firm overseas, while 74 per cent cited access to cheaper resources as a significant advantage. In addition, 65 per cent said tax incentives were a major draw.

Responding to the statistics, head of NatWest International Personal Banking Dave Isley said: "A new breed of entrepreneurs is emerging and it is encouraging to see that the '21st pioneers' are thriving in foreign climes. It is interesting to see that Singapore, Hong Kong and the US are fruitful entrepreneurial countries according to the index yet China and UAE rank so low."
