BN nursing
degree courses at the University of Southampton were the first in the country
to receive official accreditation from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
These new nursing degrees represent the future of nursing training and were specifically
designed to prime new nurses to lead modern practice, using cutting-edge
research-based training.
The curriculum of these BN nursing degrees was endorsed highly by the NMC on
several specific attributes, particularly the ‘Southampton values-based model'
which highlights the importance of sensitive, intelligent and compassionate
care.
Southampton nursing degree course students will be expected to focus on their
beliefs, values, attitudes and professionalism to ensure that patients get the
top quality care they need.
Fundamental characteristics of this nursing degree course include: an emphasis
on the development of graduate attributes, research-based learning, grading of
practice, and an inter professional belief in combined learning of nurses, midwives
and their occupational therapy, podiatry and physiotherapy colleagues.
The BN presents students the option of completing a single field nursing degree
course in three years, or a dual field nursing degree course in four years.
Single field BN nursing degree courses may be undertaken in the adult, child or
mental health areas of practice. Alternatively the dual field BN nursing degree
courses may be undertaken in the adult and mental health, or adult and child
areas of practice.
A nursing masters degree course is also offered by the University of
Southampton. The MN in nursing studies enables graduates to become
exceptionally knowledgeable, competent and skilful practitioners.
In 2009 ninety-three per cent of Health Sciences graduates from the University
of Southampton were either employed, or elected to pursue further study.
Numerous University of Southampton graduates currently occupy senior NHS
positions.
