A commercial photographer will work in many different settings and will be employed to take photographs for a very specific purpose. The common areas that a commercial photographer will take pictures for are magazines, catalogues, newspapers, advertising materials and company literature etc.  A commercial photographer will often take pictures of still items such as items of clothing, food, and packaging. Many large product manufactures will employ a commercial photographer to take pictures of their products to promote to potential buyers. They may also do a lot of work for the food industry taking pictures of food and drinks for advertising, packaging and editorial use.

Many large companies such as web based businesses may employ their own in house commercial photographer as they solely rely on great images to sell their products via a website. Many commercial photographers now carry out work for use online. This is due to the rise of internet shopping and online marketing so more and more images are needed to promote products and show items clearly for shoppers. A typical commercial photographer will work on a freelance basis so they have the opportunity to photograph many different things not just commercial work. This way they can build up a great portfolio of work to show to potential clients.

A commercial photographer may also be an architectural photographer. An architectural photographer will take pictures of buildings both inside and out. They may photograph both old and new buildings and take pictures of things like kitchens and bathrooms for promotional purposes. An architectural photographer is often needed to take photographs for creating marketing literature of new build properties. Many architecture firms will also require an architectural photographer to capture images of all their projects before, during and after completion. Some architecture photographers may specialise in certain areas such as capturing images of very old historic buildings and taking pictures of great examples of old architecture inside buildiings.
