The price of excellence was 25 years for Martin Garage Doors in making the world’s best galvanized torsion springs.
That two-and-a-half decade journey towards excellence is the difference between a galvanized spring that is the industry’s best, versus another spring that will bring more problems than it is worth--- and in some cases will turn off a garage door dealer to galvanized springs completely.
Martin’s secret didn’t come easily, so he knows other companies who haven’t invested the time, effort and detail to the process are still a hit and miss proposition. It’s mostly a miss, as experience has shown.
Dave tells the story of the late Ken Sadohara in Japan and his experience with galvanized springs. Sadohara felt another manufacturer in the U.S. offered a better deal on galvanized springs than Martin was, at one point, so he opted for the non-Martin option.
Two years later, after an avalanche of fatiging springs, he had replaced nearly every one of the springs he had installed.
The stories go beyond just one experience.
Dave also tells the story of talking to a garage door parts manufacturer, whose company had tried to replicate Martin’s spring, and lamented to Martin that the idea had nearly put him out of business.
Many of the Martin knock offs have been known to fatigue early.
That continues to be the case as another company official found in a recent meeting with door companies, all of whom had some bad experiences with galvanized torsion springs. He said one official spent an hour expressing his experience and frustration in trying to sell and service someone else’s galvanized torsion spring.
The company owner said his experience with other manufacturers’ galvanized springs angered him to the point of wanting them outlawed and the spring manufacturers reprimanded.
It’s no accident many of Martin’s door models include a lifetime warranty on the galvanized spring.
