Creating an open plan office has many benefits. The ability for staff to move easily and connect with each other is vastly increased, making any space more efficient. Such an approach also removes any feelings of claustrophobia for people and, somewhat strangely, the bigger space will actually usually help aid concentration. Open plan offices also look and feel more modern and can instantly give a far superior impression of a company to those visiting, as well as those already on the inside.

However, the right approach needs to be taken and boundaries need to be clearly defined to help people to feel they still have personal space and that the office remains structured rather than becoming chaotic.

Privacy will also be very much needed. Using screens can help ensure people don’t feel too exposed whilst having rooms set apart from the main office for meetings and for people to discuss other matters in private will be extremely important. However, even in separate rooms, meeting furniture should be bought with a view to optimising space. The best office meeting tables will be easily moved and stored to ensure that such rooms can be as versatile as possible and create even more possibility for a company.

Meeting furniture will need to be as practical as possible if you wish to make the most of an open plan office as certain scenarios are likely to mean that such separate rooms might also be needed for very specific, more private matters of all shapes and sizes. The more flexible your rooms and your office meeting tables, the better.

Open plan offices can help individuals more easily feel part of a team. However, rules need to be established and spaces clearly defined – if you can get that right then you will have a workforce that can easily work together and in turn achieve far more.
