Being an estate agent isn’t all about selling houses

Having a career as an estate agent would, by many, be thought to involve marketing and selling houses. However, as with the majority of things in life, it’s not quite that simple. To put it simply though, it’s about being a people person.

It’s for this reason that many people entering the career don’t make it as one of the best estate agents in their area. Whilst the fundamental skills of being an estate agent can readily be taught, the fundamental talent building rapport with customers and communicating clearly can’t.

In part, it’s this ability to communicate which has fuelled common belief that estate agents are smooth operators, concerned only with making money fast. However, such opinion has only developed over the last 40 years, as companies concerned more with hawking other services have moved in, rather than concentrating on the sellers and buyers they’re working with.

Fortunately, things are starting to improve, as clear codes of practice have been introduced. Those buying or selling property have also become more empowered. As the internet has matured, so too have the ways in which people use it. Product, holiday and car reviews play a big part in decision making these days, and estate agent reviews are now doing much the same thing.

There’s also been an increase in the number of university graduates entering the profession, taking the place of many work shy school leavers that were drawn to the job in the 80s and 90s. They’re attracted by the possibility of making significant money, of course, but they do so knowing it’ll require a great deal of time and effort on their part.
