High visibility clothing is a requirement for many workplaces, but the type and amount of clothing required will vary depending on the environment and work involved. The reasons for wearing hi vis clothing are fairly obvious – to make sure you can easily be seen so as not to become one of the 2000 people who are seriously injured each year due to accidents in the workplace involving vehicles. Vehicles which restrict visibility, such as lorries and fork lift trucks, need to know you are there, particularly when reversing into confined spaces with limited lighting. For this reason, employers are now legally obliged to supply adequate high visibility clothing to all employees and visitors to site.

When employers are choosing hi vis clothing for their workforce and visitors, they must always first think about the environment it is going to be worn in. This will determine how much of the clothing needs to be hi vis. Many building contractors will only require a vest, while other types of worker may need trousers and jackets to fully be seen. When working in very dark conditions, make as much of the clothing as possible hi vis, and always make sure there are retroreflective stripes that can be picked up by vehicle headlights.

Another important consideration is that the clothing must not catch in any equipment that might be used by the employee. For this reason, a vest or waistcoat will not always be suitable. Clothing must not be restrictive either, however, and the wearer should always feel comfortable in what they are wearing. Hi vis clothing can also become a uniform for some workers, and you might like to think having your company name and/or logo printed on, particularly if your employees work on a number of different sites or amongst other companies.
