High visibility clothing is now grouped into three classes, depending on what kind of working environment it is being worn in. As a general rule, the darker the workplace, the more high visibility clothing is required, with class 3 being the highest form of visibility. Class 3 includes high visibility jackets and coveralls, as well as trousers and jackets together. As well as those working in dark or confined spaces, road traffic workers must wear high visibility jackets with sleeves conforming to class 3 requirements when working on dual carriageways or roads with speeds over 50mph. Other road workers need only wear class 2 clothing, which includes vests, bibs and waistcoats.
All employers are required to supply the necessary clothing to their employees free of charge in order to meet the legal requirements. They are also obliged to check the clothing meets the minimum standards (so it can be clearly seen when being used by the wearer) as well as storing the clothing correctly when it is not in use. They are also required to check that all necessary clothing is actually being worn, as well as training staff in the need for high visibility gear so that they are fully aware of the risks involved in not wearing the appropriate clothing.
While high visibility clothing is a legal requirement for health and safety purposes in the workplace, this is not the case for road users in Britain. Many other countries in Europe require drivers to have a hi-vis vest in their vehicle in case they break down, and cyclists are required to wear some form of fluorescent clothing in poor light conditions. While this is not the case in the UK, it is always a good idea to make sure you can be seen at all times when you are in a vulnerable position on a busy road.
