A lot is said about the number of fat pets wobbling around. However, much less is said about the high number of underweight pets. Whilst it may not seem to be as big a problem, malnutrition amongst pets is surprisingly common and even those who are slightly underweight can actually see numerous health problems as a result.
A lot is said about the number of fat pets wobbling around. However, much less is said about the high number of underweight pets. Whilst it may not seem to be as big a problem, malnutrition amongst pets is surprisingly common and even those who are slightly underweight can actually see numerous health problems as a result.

There are many different reasons that a pet can be underweight. Should you see a dramatic loss in weight in your pet then there is a good chance that they have an illness that will need to be treated specifically by a vet. However, it is also worth first changing their pet diet to see if the loss of weight is related to them simply not enjoying their food.

Pet diet is extremely important and many of the high street brands will not only be fairly tasteless, but they may also not have the right level of dedicated nutrition. Cats may well be known for being extremely greedy animals, but a surprising number are actually very picky when it comes to food and those owners who have never actively thought about the pet diet they are offering may not even know that their kitten is underweight, believing that they are simply just small.

For those with a ‘small’ or underweight kitten or puppy, choosing pet food from an outlet such as Hill’s Pets that specialises in high quality products may well help you get them to a healthy weight without the need for vets. Choosing the right pet food is likely to not only ensure that what you are giving them has the right nutrients to help them grow in the right way and is tasty enough to ensure they eat the right amount, but the right outlets are also likely to stock products that focus on other specific health issues too.
