Considerations for pet owners on how to store their dog food to ensure it stays fresh.
Whilst dogs almost certainly have a better
constitution than us humans that does not mean that you can forget food hygiene
when it comes to your pooch. Whether it is dry of wet dog food it is important
that you store it properly to ensure that you are giving your dog the best
possible food and not putting their health at risk.
Dry dog food is naturally the easier option to
keep, particularly as many manufacturers state that by adding preservatives, it
can be kept in the original bag for up to six months. However whilst this may
be possible, the advice remains to store dry dog food properly,
in an airtight container to ensure that it is kept as fresh as possible. There are
some dog owners that even recommend dividing the bag of kibble and placing it
in the freezer to ensure it’s as fresh as possible.
Freshness for a dog, even with dry food is
important as they are so reliant upon scent and smell. Freezing helps food to
retain much of its scent and subsequently makes it more appealing for dogs. Freezing
food can be done easily using zip bags or even regular sandwich bags.
Canned or wet dog food understandably lasts a long
time but it is still advisable when shopping to check the best before data, particularly
on more specific, less popular brands. The longer lifespan of tinned food can
make it more appealing for dog owners although once a tin is opened it is vital
that it is used relatively quickly.
Most manufacturers advise that once opened tinned
dog food should be consumed within a few days although most owners will use it
within a day to stop the fridge from smelling like dog food. To maintain
freshness or to prevent odours stinking up the fridge it is possible to cover
the tinned food, either using cling film or a tin sealing lid.
Ultimately keeping your dog food fresh is important
to ensure that your pet gets the best food possible every single day.
