Regardless of how delicious avocados are, something occurs in the process to make it not so great. It may have been perfect while it was on the tree, however it can get bruised along the way along with other things that can directly or indirectly affect its taste.
Regardless of how delicious avocados are, something occurs in the process to make it not so great. It may have been perfect while it was on the tree, however it can get bruised along the way along with other things that can directly or indirectly affect its taste.

Compared to other fruits, picking the best avocado in the grocery could be a little difficult. One example is that it's  difficult to determine when it's ripe or when it is not. The skin of some avocado types can change color when ripe, from green to dark purple, yet others remains green even when it gets overly ripe to be consumed. To prevent yourself from doing such a mistake when going avocado-shopping, below are a few guidelines you can follow which will help lead you to the best avocado.

In case you will not be using it until after a number of days, pick an avocado that stays firm when you cup it in your hand. Avocados don't ripen before it has been picked from the tree, so in case you find one which is overly soft, this means it's been on display for a long time. You can place the avocado in a paper bag for one day or two if you wish to hasten the ripening process.

Ripe avocados, though still firm, are slightly soft when held. Please bear in mind, that the word here is held, not press. Unless you're certain you will buy it, leaving a dent on the avocado while checking if it's ripe enough could leave the fruit damaged, especially when plenty of people are doing exactly the same thing.

The skin of over ripe avocados seem like it's already separated from the meat and definitely will taste rancid. The key is picking a soft but not mushy avocado. A white-colored powder growing close to the stem may be an indicator that the fruit is over ripe.

The shape of the avocado won't  influence its quality, irrespective of how crooked it may appear to be. So does its size. It may look big and beautiful, but it won't  mean it is better.

Brown scaly markings on the skin of the fruit does not necessarily indicate decaying flesh, but dark blemishes, sunken spots and cracks are usually positive signs of decaying. Pick ones with a deep and even glossy color. If you see that the stem starts to somewhat pull off from the skin of the avocado, then this means it's just about ripe.

One more helpful tip in determining how ripe an avocado is to pick off its stem. Take note of the color of the little circle under it. If it's brown, that means the avocado is over ripe. If it is yellow-green, it indicates it is not yet ready to be used and when the color is bright green, in spite of the brown flecks on it, it indicates that it is the ideal avocado for you.
