There are many pilots who grew up idolizing the jet warbird military aircraft, and the pilots who flew them, wishing that they could have a turn in the front seat. Fortunately, all that is required to make this dream a reality is a current medical. MIG training, upset recovery training and aerobatics are only a few examples of the aircraft training and courses that are available to pilots who would like to enrol in a training center, to either become certified in Jet Warbird flight, or visit for a once in a lifetime flight experience.
MIG Training
The aircraft is an example of early swept-wing design. It has a good number of the handling qualities that have since been designed out of newer jets. The transonic aircraft is limited to .94 mach, or about 620 mph. The fuel burn is approximately 300 gph and this makes the aircraft an incredibly fun flying experience. The MIG 15 was produced from 1946 to 1955. The model was manufactured in Russia, Czechoslovakia, Poland and China. More than 10,000 were produced, and some are still in service in third world air forces.
Upset Recovery Training
Upset recovery training could be taught with the use of a simulator but this method does not bring out the natural fear and anxiety that is truly necessary to act quickly and calmly while under pressure. This type of training can also be taught in a piston aircraft. However the piston aircraft does not come close to reaching the speeds necessary to feel the Gs, and it would take a lot longer to reach, “time of impact” than a jet engine aircraft. This is unrealistic for such an important and necessary training course.
The solution is using a real jet warbird to teach upset recovery training. The course is taught in an L-39 and the students will be descending in downward spirals at a 4 G pull. This is a very realistic way to learn how to recover an aircraft, as it brings out true levels of anxiety and enough Gs, to feel like it’s the real deal.
Aerobatic Training
When many pilots think of jet training they envision learning how to perform aerial tricks. The aerobatic training provides pilots with just that vision. This is a course that has been designed to teach a number of aerial jet tricks including:
1.Full Stall Series
2.Aileron Rolls
3.2 Point Rolls
4.Loops
5.Immelmans
6.Cuban 8's
7.Cloverleaf
8.Barrel Rolls
This is an extremely fun course that can be taken in an L-39, T-33, and T-34 or as part of Fouga training. Regardless of what the pilot has in mind, he or she can find the aircraft, type of training and training center that does it all in Santa Fe.
The Jet Warbird Training Center teaches pilots how to fly out of the Santa Fe Municipal Airport. To find out more visit, jetwarbird.
