Shanghai, China's largest city, one of
the four central municipalities, is the economic, financial, trade and shipping
center in the mainland. Shanghai is an emerging tourist destination, a modern
city with strong cultural heritage and many historical monuments. As we all
know, Shanghai is the host city for the 2010 World Expo. Let's see some of the
famous scenic spots.
Rising above the Huangpu River and Pudong
skyline, the Oriental Pearl Tower holds a special place in Shanghai's
recent history. Before the early 1990s, the east bank of the Huangpu was a
low-rise jumble of warehouses and muddy settlements. The construction of the
tower, completed in 1995, served as a symbolic declaration of Shanghai's
future-forward orientation and grand ambition. Many people treat the Bund
as the face of Shanghai. Even as the city transforms itself, growing upwards
and outwards at a tremendous rate, the Bund's Art Deco and Neoclassical facades
appear much as they did during Shanghai's previous heyday as China's most
international city, way back in the 1920s and '30s. Of course, the surroundings
have changed radically since then. Made up of five 60-hectare zones, the
spotlight has shone brightly on Expo Park during Shanghai's six-month
World's Fair. Among the other attractions in the Park are 60 national,
international, and corporate pavilions, as well as a World Expo Centre and Expo
Performing Arts Center, both of which will remain standing, along with the
China Pavilion, after Expo's end. The Yu Gardens are a classical oasis
in Shanghai's relentlessly modernizing cityscape. The gardens, completed in
1577 by the aristocratic Ming Dynasty Pan family, retain their original grace
and elegance even in the face of throngs of tourists and the commercial hubbub
of Yu Bazaar just on the other side of the garden walls. Situated in the midst
of the Old City near the Temple of the City God, the gardens make an excellent
and restful stop in a walking tour of the area. Many other attracting scenic
spots can be found here, such as Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Jade
Buddha Temple, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai
Grand Theatre, Huangpu River Cruise etc.
At the same time, Shanghai is one of
China's largest machinery industrial bases with a complete range of machinery
