One such type of blanket box is the hope chest. The hope chest has been known to be a gift passed down from mother to daughter in commemoration of special events in their life such as when they move out or when they marry. These boxes have also been known to have been produced with various types of materials. Usually wood is the most common choice when it comes to these chests as the material made the boxes much more durable . As a matter of fact, chests made of wood are known to be able to last for multiple generations if handled and preserved with care. Sometimes, these chests can be so old that they can qualify for antiques and if they are well preserved, can be worth small fortunes to collectors.

There are even known cases where a single antique wooden chest dating back several centuries was bought by a collector with several thousand dollars. If one is looking for a chest for storing uses however, nowadays, there are numerous reasonably priced options available. Nowadays, these storage chests are also made from a whole variety of materials ranging from cedar to oak. Apart from cedar and oak, two other common woods used are walnut and pine as all four woods are extremely durable. Another interesting fact is that these woods have a pleasant scent and are even able to repel insects. Needless to say, these woods are capable at preventing damage caused by insects. Depending on the designs, there are chests that can be used in many different ways such as those with padded lids can also be used as seats.

In this case, these chests can be used to store everything from shoes to reading materials while also able to be sat on when the lid is closed. One common use for these chests is in the bedroom for storing everything from pillows to extra sheets. Another common design of chests is one that consists of drawers which can even be used for storing clothes as well as used as bed stands provided they are short enough. Apart from the bedroom, some households use these chests to keep their kitchenware, china and even crockery in their kitchens. These chests are also great in the living room where it can not only be used to store all manner of items but also for aesthetic values. These chests can even be used as a platform for placing the television or stereo and even storing Cd's and DVD's in the drawers. For a more unique look in the living room, you can use the chests in the living room as a platform for an aquarium. Another interesting use for these chests is as a coffee or telephone table. Long story short, these chests can be used almost anywhere in the house.

Of course, for the bathroom, these chests can be used to store toiletries and even extra towels though chests of lacquered wood will be better for preventing water damage. A fair number of men even use these storage chests in their garages as a place to keep their carpentry, gardening and workshop tools as well as items as well as to store old belongings. Although there are still some brands that hand make these chests, most of them are mass produced. Chests made of more solid woods by hand today are usually produced artisans skilled in wood carving.

In the past, these chests would be decorated by the maker with intricately carved designs to make them more unique. As such, due to the intrinsic and aesthetic values of these handmade storage chests, it is more common for these said chests to become heirlooms. As such, its is common for these chests to be seen as a form of investment and treasured for generations to come.
