After taking home the award for Outstanding Comedy Series in last year’s Emmys, The Office is once again, well-poised to win the category this year.  It stands out among the rest of the shows nominated for Best Comedy Series, namely, 30 Rock, Entourage, Ugly Betty and Two and a Half Men.

The Office made it to six major categories in the 2007 list of Emmy nominees.  Apart from Best Comedy Series, Steve Carell also got the nod for the second straight year, for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy.  He shares the field with Alec Baldwin from 30 Rock, Charlie Sheen from Two and a Half Men, Ricky Gervais from Extras and last year’s winner, Tony Shalhoub from Monk.  Interestingly enough, Ricky Gervais had starred in the original U.K. version of The Office and is even one of the executive producers for the U.S. production.

Apart from Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson and Jenna Fischer also got acting nominations for the popular sitcom.  This is the most number of acting nominations The Office has ever received from the Emmys.  Wilson was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor while Fischer was cited for Outstanding Supporting Actress.  Greg Daniels and Michael Schur were also named for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series while Ken Kwapis got the nod for Outstanding Directing.

While Steve Carell seems to be the heavy favorite in his category, Rainn Wilson faces stiff competition from a heavily stacked field.  His co-nominees include Entourage’s Kevin Dillon and Jeremy Piven, Neil Patrick Harris from How I Met Your Mother and Jon Cryer from Two and a Half Men.

As for Ficher, she finds herself in a six-way contest with Jaime Pressly from My Name is Earl, Holand Taylor and Conchata Ferrell from Two and a Half Men, Vanessa Williams from Ugly Betty and Elizabeth Perkins from Weeds.
