Knowing how you can avoid gum disease is very important because gum disease can cause you to go as far as lose your teeth.

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is caused by poor dental hygiene. By not flossing and brushing regularly, gums can become red and swollen. Eventually, the gums will bleed, they will recede away from the tooth, and that can lead to teeth falling out. If you’ve ever seen someone who looks like they have long teeth, you will find that it is because they have receding gums. Those receding gums will keep receding until the teeth eventually fall out. The gums are largely responsible for keeping the teeth in place. When the gums have receded, gum disease can then move on to the bones that support the teeth. Many individuals who have lost teeth have lost them due to gum disease. That is why it is very important to avoid gum disease.

How does gum disease start?

As stated before, it starts because of poor dental hygiene. Plaque builds up on the teeth and it becomes hard. Eventually this plaque can become toxic because the bacterium in the plaque attacks the gums. This then leads to gingivitis. If the gingivitis is untreated, then that can lead to Periodontitis, which is a more advanced form of gun disease. This is the phase in which gum disease can move on to the bones that support the teeth and eat it away. Sounds pretty scary, doesn’t it? That’s because it is and gives everyone good reason to avoid gum disease through good oral hygiene.

When the gums start backing away from the teeth, pockets form. The bacteria can reside within these pockets. This is the part in which the teeth start to decay and rot. The teeth become loose and they will fall out. This can be quite painful. What one will find is that they have lost a lot of teeth in a short period of time. It is surprisingly quick.

Even more consequences

If you don’t think those incidents are inspiration enough to avoid gum disease, it can get worse. Bad breath is involved, as well as painful abscesses. This is the point where it can cost you thousands upon thousands to straighten out the mess. That is why you have to avoid gum disease. Even if you are in the beginning or middle stages, you can ward it off by brushing your teeth twice each day, flossing at least once per day, using a good mouthwash, and using an oral balm. The oral balm is going to actually kill the bacteria to either avoid gum disease or stop it in its tracks. You can reverse the effects before they get too bad by taking good care of your mouth.

By practicing good oral hygiene, you’ll notice that your mouth will look and feel much better. Just keep in mind that you can avoid the thousands of dollars at the dentist if you do what you need to in order to kill the bacteria. An oral balm such as Nature’s Smile is good for that when you use it in addition to regular tooth brushing and flossing. You’ll find that you can avoid a painful future by doing this.
