When you take out home insurance, you are protecting your home contents from theft and damage.
It is never nice to think
about what disasters could befall you but unless you think ahead, you could
find yourself unable to replace the contents of your home. If a fire or flood
should ravage your home, it may be difficult to remember all of your valuable
possessions. In order to make a true and accurate claim on your home insurance, it’s
a very good idea to make an inventory of your house contents. Not only will it
make claiming your insurance simpler, it will allow your insurance company to
process your claim as quickly as possible so that you can get back to enjoying
life.
Making an inventory doesn’t
have to be a long an arduous task. You can make it easy by taking a photograph
of each room in your house. This not only documents the contents of each room,
it provides proof of your contents and can help you remember items when filling
out your claim form. Store your photographic inventory in a safe place and if
you can, keep a copy with a neighbour, friend or family member that does not
live with you. This ensures you have a copy if your house should burn to the
ground or if a flood sweeps through your property.
If you prefer to use pen
and paper, make a list of the contents of each room. Don’t forget places like
the loft, the cupboard under the stairs or the garage. These tucked away places
can often be overlooked when making an inventory.
If you do need to make a
claim on your home
insurance, you should get in touch with you insurer as soon as possible.
