Travelling to Europe? Want to make sure you have health insurance while you’re away? Then you need to apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you go.

What is an EHIC?

An EHIC will cover you for any necessary medical treatment caused by either an accident or illness.

What am I covered for?

It entitles you to basic healthcare and medical treatment within the state system of the country you are visiting. You will receive the same level of treatment as any person living in the country.  This can differ from county to country and might not cover all the medical care you would expect to get free of charge from the NHS in the UK. Depending on the country, you may have to pay a contribution towards the cost of your care/treatment.  The Department of Health advises that an EHIC should not be treated as a substitute for travel insurance. With the right travel insurance, you will be covered for any additional medical expenses incurred that fall out of the EHIC.

Where am I covered?

The EHIC covers you for medical treatment within the European Economic Area (EEA). The EEA includes European Union countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

How long is it valid for?

The EHIC is usually valid for between three and five years for UK nationals and UK residents. The EHIC replaced the old E111 form in 2006.

What doesn’t the EHIC cover?

The EHIC will not cover you for the following:

·         Repatriation to the UK

·         Non-emergency treatment

·         Private healthcare

·         Lost belongings

·         Stolen items

·         Unexpected delays or cancellations

How do I apply for an EHIC?

There are three ways you can apply for an EHIC.

·         Apply online at www.ehic.org.uk. You should receive your card within seven days.

·         Call the EHIC application line on 0845 606 2030. It can take up to 10 days to receive your card.

·         Fill in an application form at your local Post Office and post it off. This can take up to 21 days.

Top up with travel insurance

Travel insurance provides the extra security of knowing that if you need emergency medical attention, you are covered for any contributions not covered by the EHIC. Most travel insurance companies offer a wide range of options that can include medical expenses, rescue services, funeral expenses, early travel home, extended stay, winter sports cover and more. So for complete peace of mind when you’re travelling in Europe, make sure you have an EHIC and adequate travel insurance.
