Unless you are willing to get your hands dirty, changing the oil in your car is something you may prefer to leave to the experts
The oil in your car should generally be
changed around every six months (or every 6,000 miles). If you don't change it,
the old, dirty oil will lead to engine degradation, and a higher chance of your
vehicle breaking
down.
If you do fancy tackling the task, there are
simple step-by-step instructions available on the internet on websites such as
www.bbc.co.uk. Or for a video showing you how to do it, visit www.videojug.com
and type 'oil change' into the search box.
Basically the process involves draining the
oil from your car by opening the sump plug and letting it pour out. This
usually involves raising the car up on a jack.
Once the oil has fully drained, you then
pour in some new oil.
Don't pour the old oil down a sink or drain,
however, as this will pollute the water system and will probably block up your
drains. Pouring it away in the garden is not much better as it will pollute the
soil.
Instead, take your used oil to a garage or
authorised waste collection centre (ring your local council to find your
nearest) where it can be properly disposed of.
