Every woman considering breast augmentation surgery needs to weigh the risks and benefits before determining if she wants to receive the procedure.  For most women the benefits are obvious.  These benefits include an enhanced appearance, increased confidence, and a boost in self-esteem.

While women are well-versed in the benefits of breast augmentation surgery they are generally less well-versed in the risks.  The risks and benefits to breast augmentation surgery should be discussed with your plastic surgeon so you have a full and complete understanding of both.

Some of the risks associated with breast augmentation surgery include:

  • Allergic reactions to anesthesia
  • Excessive bleeding during surgery
  • Infection
  • Implant being punctured
  • Implant leakage
  • Loss of sensation in breasts
  • Greater difficulty in diagnosing breast cancer
  • Implants moving/shifting
  • Loss of symmetry over time
  • "Uniboob" effect (implants shift and touch to create look of singular breast)

The above are some of the risks associated with breast augmentation surgery.  For a complete understanding of them and others you should speak to your plastic surgeon.  Your surgeon can explain how the risks differ with respect to the type of implant and the type of procedure. As technology and procedures continue to improve, some of these risks will become obsolete.

It is important to have a full and complete understanding of all of the risks and benefits to breast augmentation surgery.  Armed with the proper knowledge you will be able to make an informed decision on whether or not you want the procedure and which procedure is best for you.  A reputable and experienced plastic surgeon will be able to provide you with this information and help you make the best decision for you.
