In recent times, as plastic surgery has become more accessible to the public at large, more men than ever want to take advantage of new methods that can improve their looks and raise their confidence.
At
one time plastic surgery was targeted more toward women, and only affluent
women at that. However, there have always been male patients in the cosmetic
surgeon’s waiting room. In recent times, as plastic surgery has become more
accessible to the public at large, more men than ever want to take advantage of
new methods that can improve their looks and raise their confidence.
Excellent Plastic Surgery is Available
to All
One of the most common surgeries for men excises gynecomastia, the growth of
female-like breasts on a man’s chest. Most men feel ashamed and alone when they
develop this problem, but it is quite common, and the surgery that eliminates
it is fairly standard. If the swollen breast tissue is mostly fat, the doctor
can use liposuction, which is the removal of fat cells using a pump or a
syringe. For glandular or other tissue, the recommended surgery is a simpler
version of female breast reduction, in which the extra tissue is cut away and
the skin pulled up.
Chest sculpting operations are also in demand among men. These may include a
chest lift (removal of extra skin to remedy sagging), or the insertion of chest
implants for greater definition.
Liposuction is also performed on men of normal weight with “love handles” –
excess fat around the stomach, which does not respond to diet and exercise. Men
frequently undergo tummy tucks that lift sagging skin on the stomach, and the
resulting need to shift the position of the belly button. There are even
procedures meant solely to sculpt the belly button.
Other Plastic Surgery Procedures for Men
Rhinoplasty, or a “nose job,” is a popular plastic surgery for men, and is
different from those done on women. Men generally need more sculpting of the
nose and removal of flaws, such as bumps on the bridge, or a misshapen tip,
rather than simple reduction in size. Men are also more likely to need
rhinoplasty for medical reasons: to correct injuries (broken or scarred nose)
or a deviated septum (a bend in the cartilage that divides the nostrils, which
can cause snoring, sleep apnea and breathing problems).
Men also compose the majority of patients for otoplasty, a surgery that pulls
back extended ears, and for ear reduction to reduce the dimensions of overly
large ears. Correction of the receding chin through bone transplant or implants
eliminates another common male stigma.
Plastic surgery for men can, of course, correct deformities, as well. There are
operations for drastically uneven facial structures or chest deformities.
Plastic surgeons can even remedy a certain amount of facial drooping after a
stroke.
As it becomes more and more acceptable to alter flaws in appearance, plastic
surgery for men continues to rise in popularity.
