Could you control your car out of a skid or an aquaplane? What about a burst tyre? Are you confident that you could remain calm and regain control of your vehicle?

Most drivers don’t know the answer to these questions because they haven’t tested their driving skills under difficult circumstances.  In case you are ever in an emergency situation, however, it’s good to know that you can trust your reactions.  A course in advanced driving skills is a good way to train for emergency situations.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists state that advanced driving includes the following skills.

  • The skill to safely control the speed and position of the car in a smooth and systematic way.

  • The ability to progress in traffic unobtrusively, capably and responsibly, regardless of road and traffic conditions.

  • The projection of a courteous and positive attitude while behind the wheel, along with a high standard of driving competence.

  • The ability to handle the car competently, to place the vehicle at the appropriate place on the road, in the correct gear and at the right speed.

A reliable advanced driving test is one that is based on the Roadcraft system, as practised by the UK Police Force.  This system is offered by organisations such as the Royal Society of the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Advanced Drivers and Riders, as well as the High Performance Club (HPC).

Statistics show us that drivers who have passed such a test have a 50% to 75% less chance of causing an accident, according to the Advanced Driving UK website.

However, it must be remembered that a course in an advanced driving is no guarantee of remaining accident-free.  For further protection it’s advisable to take out comprehensive car insurance.  A car insurance quote is easy to obtain online and response is usually quick.
