The standard is mandated by all Department Agencies as well as Defense Department. The issue of MIL-STD-130M standard enables product designers to develop their products in alignment with the criteria set by the standard. Merely setting the definition of product in accordance with the standard may not be adequate. Beginning from the size of the product, whole application process, the geographic location of the product the product designers have to take care of everything to be able to satisfy the criteria. Also Item identification marking is also important for the product designers. The Item Identification marking should have the supplier name and a Personal Identification number (PIN) for the item that has been marked.

In comparison to MIL-STD-130L, this new standard has been set in a described manner so as to able to offer better guidance. Non-Government standards are maintained for machine-readable information or MRI which is a critical tool for asset management for life-cycle products. However the standard also stresses on free text item identification marking.

The section 3 of the standard specifies certain engineering documentation terms that might not go in keeping with the American Identification languages, though every aspect has been addressed. This section has been primarily set up to assist product designers for offering a lucid definition about the items created for military.

It is obligatory to show the purchase order number and the contract number while acquiring for a particular product from the Government acquiring agencies.
