Are you always searching through mountains of paperwork in the cubbyhole when looking for your car insurance documents? Do you have to remove litter from the floor so a passenger can join you in your vehicle? If yes, then you need to clean out your car!

Are you always searching through mountains of paperwork in the cubbyhole when looking for your car insurance documents? Do you have to remove litter from the floor so a passenger can join you in your vehicle? If yes, then you need to clean out your car!

Many people spend more time in their cars than in some rooms in their homes, and so, like the home, cars need "housekeeping”.  A dirty car is as hard to clean as a dirty kitchen, but as with housekeeping, regular tidying and cleaning will keep the job manageable.

So what to do when the situation has become a little out of control? These easy steps will soon have your car in tip top condition:

Sort your stuff:

Take everything out of the car, including car seats, and everything in the cubbyhole and door pockets. Empty out the boot. Throw away all the junk, and then organize the rest into three piles: things you use all the time, things you use occasionally and things you need in an emergency. Whatever is left over can be stored in your home or also thrown away.

Minimise:

Depending on your occupation, or how you use your car, sort through your three piles to find the things you use most often out of each pile. Return the most important things to the car; placing and storing them according to how often you use them, in what situation you use them and when you use them. Seasonal items such as ice scrapers can be stored in the garage until winter time.

Contain:

Stock your car with bags for rubbish, and contain what you can. For example, one compact CD holder is better than lots of loose CD covers. There are many different in car storage options on the market, just have a look around the shops for a solution which suits you.

Store:

Store items you use regularly in places where you can reach them. Keep car insurance information, maps, and so on together in the cubbyhole. Store your first aid kit, jumper cables and so on in any spare nook or cranny you can find, or in the boot.

Maintain:

Keep your car interior neat and tidy. Take out any rubbish every time you leave your car and put things back in their place as soon as you are done with them. This way your car will stay neat and tidy.
