Travel insurance is essential for smart travellers. Consider the cost of items in your luggage like clothes, cameras, mobile phones and other electrical goods. Now do the math and work out just how much it would cost to replace them all. Then add on the cash value you are taking with you and you could have quite a tidy sum.

Should you lose or have any of your possessions stolen, the right kind of travel insurance can protect you from substantial losses depending on the type of cover you purchase. However, there are some practical travel tips you can use to avoid parting with your precious goods.

·         Take only what you need. If you don’t need your expensive jewellery or watch, leave them at home. If you do want to take them with you, make sure that they are covered under your home insurance policy for their full value. You can do this by either specifying them on your home insurance policy or by taking out personal possessions cover.

·         Keep your valuables with you at all times or, lock them up securely in your hotel.

·         Do not flash your valuables around. Keep them in a bag out of sight until you need to use them.

·         Rather than carry large amounts of untraceable cash, use credit cards when possible.
