Looking back, they were originally developed for the Canadian government during World War 2. They then became commonplace in armed forces around the world and then spread into commercial industries such as construction and health and safety. A two-way radio is built on a half-duplex channel, which means that only one radio can transmit at a time. The ability to transmit voice is achieved via a button or push to talk (PTT) switch that engages transmission.
