A recent study has shown that if men above the age of 40 are subjected to dieting then this can decrease the risk of them developing gum infection. The basic link between this theory is bad health and development of inflammation.
A recent study has shown that if men above the
age of 40 are subjected to dieting then this can decrease the risk of them
developing gum infection. The basic link
between this theory is bad health and development of inflammation.
It has been determined that chronic inflammation is a major factor that seems
to underlie many disease processes that are related to age. If dieting is followed by the elderly then
nor does it slow down the disease process but also increases the lifespan of an
individual.
The experiment was conducted on 81 monkeys in which the males were fed about a
30% less than the desired daily caloric value for a time span of about 13 to 17
years and it was found that these monkeys had less gum inflammation and
pocketing, less immune response to bacteria as compared to males who were fed
normally.
It was seen in the other group of monkeys who were fed normally that they had
increased level of gum infection and periodontal disease and their gum problems
increased as the monkeys in this group aged.
It was stated by the researchers that it is not only important have proper oral
hygiene but on the other hand it is also very important that the individuals
care for what they eat because eating in a controlled way can reduce the gum
inflammation and development of disease processes.
This modifiable factor of watchful eating with less calories was positive only
for male monkeys. Scientists say that
with the passage of time and more studies they will be in a better position to
find this difference as observed in the experiment as outlined above.
After determining what causes this difference between males and females, it
will be a lot easier to determine better therapies for both men and women based
on the response to the injury among both sexes.
