Get the Most Out of Your LCD TV
So you bought a new big-screen LCD TV. Congratulations! Now there’s one last thing you need to do to
maximize your new purchase’s potential: Calibration! Let me help you get the most out of it so
when your friends see it for the first time, their collective jaws hit the
floor.
The single-most important action you can take is properly
calibrate your new TV. Typically, all
TVs come from the factory with their settings out of whack. So let’s get started.
First, pick out the spot that you will be watching the TV
from most. Also set the lighting to
mimic the conditions under which you’ll be watching most frequently. Finally, check the placement of your TV and
make sure it minimizes the amount of glare that it will receive.
Before we get to adjusting settings, we’ll need the proper
tools. If you have a THX-certified DVD,
you’ve got them. Pop in a movie and load
the calibration program.
Let’s take a look at the key settings: Brightness, Contrast,
Sharpness, Color, and Tint:
- Brightness:
Lower this until the drop-shadow of the THX-logo disappears
- Contrast:
Raise this until the darker white disappears into the lighter
- Sharpness:
Max this out and back it down until the artifacts and halos disappear
- Color:
Like Sharpness, max this out and ratchet it down until the colors look
appropriate
- Tint:
Follow the directions in the calibration program
Congratulations, you’re done calibrating (provided you’re
satisfied with the results) so kick back, relax, and watch your favorite shows
in all their LCD glory! Now that you’re
an expert, you should pick up <a
