A water filter is extremely important to use in our homes today and it is best to be informed about the right one to get.
Charcoal water filters are just one of the many filtration technologies used to filter water.  They are very easy to install and relatively inexpensive compared to many other types of water filters.  They happen to be the form of filter that is most often used in homes.  Charcoal water filters are very effective and will filter out most deadly contaminants, including Cryptosporidium and Guardia.

Facts about charcoal water filters:

•    Average charcoal filter will last a family 6 – 9 months.

•    Many charcoal filters are enhanced with the use of nano-silver.  This provides extra antibacterial protection, killing 650 known types of organisms.

•    Minerals in solution can still permeate a charcoal filter.

•    Water filter charcoal medium carbon is derived from coconut husks.

•    They reduce in efficiency the longer they are in use.  Regular filter changes are a must.

•    They can be susceptible to mould if left unused for long periods of time.  If water starts to taste bad – change filter!

•    You may need separate sediment prefilter so that charcoal filter doesn’t get clogged up.

•    Cannot change the PH balance of water.

Different types of charcoal water filters:

•    Carbon Block – best form of filter but flow rate is slower than with loose charcoal

•    Activated Silver Impregnated Charcoal – also called Chlorgon – adds chloramines exclusion and bacteria killing ability to the basic carbon

•    Micron Rating – has a micron rating of 1 or below which means it will inhibit deadly viruses and cysts as they are larger than this in size.

Charcoal filters are an excellent choice for a home water filter in order to be protected from contaminated water.  They can be bought for a refillable pitcher or they can be mounted on the tap.  They are one of the cheapest options for water filters and are very widely used.  However if you get your water from a well, a charcoal filter is not recommended as bacteria could breed in your filter.  Shop and compare online to find the right charcoal water filter that will suit your needs.
