The process of converting voice dictation to a typewritten format utilizing word processing equipment and software is known as transcription and the person responsible for converting it called transcriptionist. Transcription has created new opportunities to work and at the same time gives people freedom to work at their own convenience. Transcription jobs are ideal for anyone with decent typing and listening skills and a desire to make good money from home.

 

Transcription is an exciting career option for today’s generation. It is a lucrative and progressive profession. Most US companies are moving towards home based transcription jobs in order to minimize their costs due to recession.

Legal transcription-A legal transcriptionist is in charge of transcribing various cases related to law, litigation, company law etc. A person desiring for a legal tarnscriptionist should have a clear understanding of law terms and knowledge of governing law is also essential.

Medical transcription- Medical transcription involves transcribing medical records into a type written format. This includes patient’s history, reports, consultation, lab reports, discharge reports and other medical records. One has to undergo formal training to become a medical transcriptionist. Apart from this, good knowledge of English and medical terminology is a must.

Media transcription- This is relatively a new stream of transcription and it includes transcribing talk show, debates, discussions, video clips. A person does not require any training for media transcription and can learn on job.

Business transcription-Business transcription includes transcribing all kinds of business meetings, seminars, conferences, interviews. It is not restricted to one particular industry. For a business transcriptionist, good typing and language skills are important.

 

An individual planning to take transcription as a career doesn’t require a rigorous training as language and typing skill are the only requirement for transcription job. However, if you are thinking about some specialized transcription work like medical or legal transcription, then it is advisable to go through the commonly used terms as a part of training. You must be familiar with the subject doing transcription. Familiarity with the equipments like computer, voice recorder, printer etc is also considered as a plus point.
