The World Wide Web is continuously
transforming people’s lives and society. The Internet has had plenty of fame
with websites that have marked their place in popular culture. First there was
Ebay and then came Napster, and now popular sites such as Myspace and Facebook
are becoming day by day a cultural phenomenon. There are plenty of legendary
websites still around such as Yahoo and Google, which are search engine sites. In
addition Yahoo and Google have jumped on to the social networking bandwagon.
What is social networking? It is everywhere, but today it mostly relates to the
Internet.
Social networking has been around for
quite some time. The earliest social network site was Classmates.com, which was
put up in 1995. This website gave people the opportunity to re-connect with
former high school classmates online. Classmates.com still exists but very few
people knew is that it would fuel invitation sites very soon. Today there are
currently over 75 social networking sites out there.
Myspace being the ‘daddy’ of all
social network sites has been, at one point, recognized as the third most
popular English language website in the world. According to Alexa.com (Internet
trafficking website) Myspace is today ranked 9th while Facebook is
ahead in 4th place. Facebook started out as being exclusively
available just to college students. While it popularized among college students
rapidly, Facebook quickly opened the site to high school students in 2006 and
soon after to the entire world. One of the biggest differences from Myspace and
Facebook is that on Myspace people can add html and many other profile
customizations to their name while Facebook is just plain text. These websites
make revenue through their sponsors which are typically advertisers from
companies across various industry spectrums.
The amazing popularity of networking
sites exploded worldwide due to a few fundamental components of human
relationships. For example, imagine if we try to understand traffic in a city
without having any maps. Without having any idea how interconnected the
different roads are we will generally become intrigued by people get around. As
we quickly learn through reference points how to navigate around the city we quickly
discover how interconnected the roads really are. Social networks work in the
same way that as humans, we have no idea how interconnected we all really are.
By joining a social network we quickly discover the power of a network and the
commonalities we have amongst each other. This cultural phenomenon has made
websites like Facebook and Myspace what it is today.
Today these social networking websites
have become even more specialized. One example of the latest, more narrowly
targeted websites out there today is a social network called RVBug.com. RVBug
is a great RV social network for RV enthusiasts, retailers, wholesalers,
dealers, consumers, and everyone in between. RV provide a place for anyone
related to the RV industry to connect with one another, share tips and ideas, post
consumer reviews, and gossip about the latest trends within the industry. These
types of websites are quickly becoming the next generation of social networks.
