There are a huge variety of gas cookers on the market these days, varying in design from the ultra modern, to the retro vintage look. But no matter what design you choose, there are some basic features that you’ll have to consider before making a purchase:

Measuring your cooker’s heat output BTUs are a measurement given to describe the level of power that a cooker’s gas burners have. BTUs have actually become a bit of a status symbol, with people willing to spend extra in obtaining the highest BTU possible. This idea is silly and wasteful. Unless you are planning to use your cooker for commercial purposes, there is no need to go for a commercial BTU level.

Sealed burners

Sealed burners mean just that – the output is sealed. The main benefit of this type of system is that they’re easier to clean than open burners. However critics say that the lack of oxygen around in a sealed burner means that the burning temperature will be lower, but the difference will be only slight.

Combination fuel ovens

A new generation of ovens is being produced that use both gas and electricity to cook food more evenly. This only really applies to non-convection ovens as convection ovens manage to distribute heat very evenly with the use of a fan.

No more cleaning nightmares

There are some clever ovens out there these days, and none more so thanthe self-cleaning variety. Gone are the days of inhaling oven cleaner fumes and battling with grease and caked-on food. Self-cleaning ovens essentially scorch dried spills, leaks and splashes off the interior, so cleaning is a thing of the past.

Double your cooking capacity

For those who like to cook big family meals, modern ovens now come in a double-oven option. Ideal for family gatherings, you’ll be able to fit in everything you need, while opting to use just the smaller oven for everyday meals, which can actually save you money in the long run.

Do I need a fan oven?

Convection or fan ovens can provide a far more even cooking result. This is because the fan enclosed at the back of the oven helps to distribute heat more evenly throughout your oven, cooking your food more evenly as a result. Food cooks more quickly too, so remember to adjust your cooking temperature accordingly when following recipes or cooking instructions.
