Dog breeding is always difficult for beginners, especially when you consider the amount of time, money, and effort you need to invest.  Don’t make the mistake of rushing in before you know your subject.  The key to success is research followed by even more research.  Once you’re equipped with all the theoretical knowledge you should consult an expert breeder.  Visit his premises and take note of the way he does things.  You will gain valuable insight into the actual dog breeding experience.

Why not start out with a female dog?  Ideally she should be two years old because that is the perfect age for her to start breeding and caring for puppies.  You need to acquire a good female.  Make sure she is not only registered but is also the best in her breed.  She should be free from genetic faults and health problems.

Once you have your perfect female you will need to look for a suitable stud.  Some studs are offered for sale while others are accessed via payment of a fee.  The most popular and reputable breeds are expensive, but if you want attractive puppies you need to look for an experienced stud.  Don’t be persuaded to use a friend’s stud; you need to look for the best.  Visit the kennel club in your local area.  Ask to see the dog’s certification; and following clear arrangements you can arrange to bring your female to meet the stud.  This arrangement means the stud owner can help with the mating process.  First time females can be difficult so you need all the expert help you can get.

Dog breeding can be a fine hobby if you just want to breed pups to give to friends and relatives.  On the other hand, if you want to start a dog breeding business you will need to obtain a permit.  In some states the law requires dog breeding kennels to hold a permit, while in other states it is not deemed necessary.  For your own legal protection it is wise to obtain a permit just in case issues arise such as neighbours complaining about the noise.  A permit offers protection in the event of a dispute.

Dog breeding is not as difficult as it may seem when you’re a beginner.  Once you start work it can be a rewarding experience.  Seeing cute puppies can make it all seem worthwhile.  There is nothing like seeing the happy smiling face of a new owner walking out of your home with a new pup.
