On several occasions in the last year, I’ve had the privilege of having my client’s search engine optimization critiqued by other so called search engine optimizers.  Such is life as an SEO consultant, particularly in corporate circles where search engine optimization is seen as something completely foreign to the usual online marketing. Yet, because so little is known about SEO and how it is planned, strategized and implemented, these tens of thousands of pretenders can get away with portraying themselves as SEO experts. Why would so many cautious and extensively trained business people use such poor judgement in hiring a web design enthusiast who calls himself an SEO expert?

The best proof of expertise is a long list of a variety of websites that are drawing significant traffic via search engines. I don’t take back things that don’t belong to me.

 

The plight of an SEO company is a strange one though. In any other area of business, intense scrutiny would be placed on a supply of services with proof of performance required. Yet many web design companies try to take on the role of search engine optimization and they fail badly. I’ve seen this so many times. Of course, that’s when the company CEO or marketing manager calls Bay Street SEO. That’s when things start happening and they begin to realize the power of search engine marketing. If you’re webmaster or Indian programmer, you should stick to your knitting. Offering SEO services as a carrot to get the big deal, or to ensure you can redirect funds of SEO for web design or expensive web development projects is nothing more than fraud.

 

I’ve witnessed a number of so called SEO companies authorizing big scale web designs and web development projects with all the bells and whistles, which were actually preventing the web site from achieving rankings and traffic. I get to see this because companies ask me why the site isn’t working. The web designer or Indian programmer shouldn’t have promised rankings and traffic. Adding keywords to meta tags and getting useless link exchanges isn’t what SEO is about. Search engines have far beyond such keyword stuffing approaches.

 

The better web design companies have the courage to tell their clients the truth. That they need a legitimate SEO specialist to create an original solution that will work to generate significant traffic. If it’s not going to generate plenty of traffic on targeted keyphrases, then it’s not worth doing. Who gets rich on a small trickle of traffic to their website?
