This summer British Gas is making it easier for you to go green.
Boilers account for 60% of the total CO2 emissions we as individuals
produce. But this amount can be greatly reduced if we all switch to
energy-efficient boilers.
We could save enough energy to power 3.4 million
homes for year and 13 million tonnes of CO2. As an added bonus each of
us could save around £275 on our heating bills.
The offer from British Gas is worth £852 and includes
£400 off a new boiler, free home care for one a year in case something
breaks and free radiator and heating controls. So add the £275 saved on
your bill and you are looking at well over £1000 in savings this year.
Not bad!
So how do these boilers work? Firstly, they work on a
combination system. They remove the need to store water and only come
on as and when you need them. This means that you don’t need to leave
the boiler on all night if you want a hot shower in the morning. They
heat the water rapidly and efficiently therefore requiring less energy
and producing less CO2.
Also, energy efficient boilers, or condensing
boilers, periodically condense the water vapour in the tank. It uses a
heat exchanger to transfer heat that would normally be expelled through
the flue back into usable energy. This means that as much heat as
possible is transferred from the boiler’s burner and as little as
possible is lost through the exhaust flue.
These new boilers also come with a full set of
heating controls which give you far greater control on the heat level
in each room at any given time, meaning less wastage.
For example, in the winter you can set the timer for
the heat to come on just before your alarm goes off each morning,
giving you hot water for a shower and a warm house to have breakfast
in. You can also use thermostat controls so that rooms that are highly
frequented like the kitchen are warmer than those that are rarely used,
like that spare room on the ground floor for example.
We contribute 40% to Britain’s total greenhouse gas
emissions during our daily routines in the home and car. By making
these few small changes, we can make a big difference to our immediate
environment and that of the world as a whole.
