We have all had that same experience before. That feeling we have had since we were young children hearing noises and thinking monsters and boogeymen roam the house. Except when we are older and we hear a noise in the house we understand that those sounds could be caused by some real-life boogeymen. Having someone breaking into your home can be a scary situation but here are some tips that will help if someone were ever in that type of situation.

The most important objective for you when an intruder enters your home is to ensure the safety of you and your family. If you hear any suspicious noises do not wait to take action. However do not recklessly investigate knowing it could potentially be a burglar or murderer. It is best to either gather your family and exit the house or keep everyone behind a locked door. If you can leave the house try doing so without the intruder knowing but do not jump out of a window and risk injuring yourself. If you can not escape then barricade the door to your room as secure as possible. Be sure to have cell phone handy and call the police immediately.

Once you are sure you are safely secure in your room you can try two tactics. You can either be as quiet as possible and wait till the proper authorities arrive or you can try to scare the intruder away by making a lot of noise or letting him or her know you have contacted the police. But be careful if you try the ladder. If it were a burglar then that person may flee but if the person had other intentions that it would possibly only make the intruder angry and more violent.

In case the intruder happens to break through your barricade or just happens to catch you off guard, do not go down without a fight. If you have a gun in the house then keep it handy. But do not be foolish and go seeking out the intruder. For all you know he or she could have a gun as well. But in a scenario were you do not have a firearm then use whatever you can as a weapon. Try keeping a bat or some other blunt object near your bed or try throwing items at the intruders. Do whatever you can to either make the intruder flee or to create and opportunity for you and your family to escape.

The most effective way to deal with a break in is to scare away the intruder as soon as possible or by keeping him or her out in the first. Try investing in some burglar alarm monitoring systems or burglar proof doors. It is OK to spend some money on keeping you and your family safe. Also try having a family dog. Dogs can sometimes be more effective at alerting of and scaring away an intruder. Lastly, keep a phone handy with an emergency speed dial number and remember to always lock your doors.
