The increasing miniaturization and power of audio technology gives police forces a new ally in the constant struggle against organized crime. Micro recorders can prove VERY useful in this struggle.
In order to fight
crime, be it the petty one that infests the city streets putting citizens’
security at risk, or organized mob that is polluting the very heart of a democratic
state, police forces need to be able to use the most advanced surveillance
technologies to be up to date and able to fight such a hideous enemy. A small
example is given by digital micro recorders, very useful when it comes to
evidence gathering.
A recent example comes
from a real event that took place in the Puglia region of Southern Italy, an
area where the drugs market is tightly controlled by gangs of Albanian
immigrants. Specifically, some gang members were gathering in a park, always
sitting on the same bench. The language barrier made it particularly hard to
understand their conversations, thus making it vital, for the course of
investigations, to have them recorded and translated at a later stage. But how
could this be achieved?
This is exactly where
technology comes into the picture, with the ever increasing miniaturization of
portable recording equipment. In fact, a quick internet search immediately gave
the right solution: an ultra thin
micro recorder, as small and as thin as a credit card, which can
record up to 600 hours of conversations thanks to its long-lasting battery.
Such a miniature
recorder, with its tiny size, can be concealed practically anywhere. Since it
is powered by a battery, it does not need to be recharged for a long time, and
thanks to its internal hard drive and its USB connector, downloading the
recording on a PC takes just a few seconds.
Furthermore, it is
equipped with a voice activation sensor, which allows for a rational
optimization of recording, while saving on battery life, starting the recorder
only when the sensor detects voices within its range.
The local precinct
agents, once they got hold of the miniaturized recorder, just had to wait for
the night to fall, and all they had to do at that point was placing the thin recorder
under the bench where the gang was meeting, by simply using some double-sided
Scotch tape. Thanks to its 4mm thickness, it was easy to conceal it where no
one would notice it.
Since the maximum recording
time is approximately 600 hours, after more than 20 days they went back to
retrieve the
micro
recorder, downloaded the recorded material on a PC, recharged the
battery and placed it again where it was.
After one month or so,
thanks to a translator who was listening to the recorded material and
translating the relevant conversations, the police was able to bring the gang
before a court of law, also locating the place where the drugs were being
stored, and the supplier was also identified and arrested.
Of course, this is
just one of the possible examples and hundreds of applications that digital
miniature recorders can be used for, in all their models. There are, in fact,
along with LCD microrecorders, also pen recorders, key holders concealing a
miniature recording device, lighter recorders or USB sticks with an embedded
recorder, all of which are perfectly working and highly sensitive.
